Leo C. Kauffmann began working at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1916 and moved to the American Banknote Company in 1926.
After a period working for the General Banknote Co. in New York and returning to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Kauffmann produced many stamp engravings.
He created engravings for Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Iran, and the Dominican Republic.
For Turkey, he produced the engraving of the scouts (buglers) on the 1.000 Lira note from the 3rd emission and the engraving of the students on the reverse of the 500 Lira note (the workshop engravings of the 500 Lira composition were engraved by Arthur C. Vogel) (*1).
