Seçkin Pirim

Seçkin Pirim, is the winner of the coin design contest of 1998, made in partnership with the TEMA Foundation to increase awareness on erosion.

The coin depicts trunks of five trees on a background of cracked and cleft soil, symbolizing fifth anniversary of the TEMA Foundation. Leaves form a wreath referring to the sorrow of erosion; death of the land. The inscription over the leaves read “TÜRKİYE ÇÖL OLMASIN” (Türkiye / Turkey, Should Not Be Allowed to Become a Desert) the motto of the foundation.

This commemorative was minted in two types; one silver and one bronze. The first one was presented to Mr. Hayrettin Karaca – the president and founder of the TEMA Foundation (*28, p. 2)

 

 

 


Seçkin Pirim also participated in the competition of commemorative for the 34. World Chess Olimpiads in 2000. His submissions were awarded with mentions. (Said coin was minted with the designs of Necmi Özgür and Beti Cenudioğlu)

The artist was born in 1977, and graduated Istanbul Anatolian Fine Arts High School in 1995 and completed his masters degree on Sculting at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in 2001.

Turhan Selçuk (1922 ~ 2010)

Turhan Selcuk was a prominent cartoonist and illustrator known for the comic strip Abdulcanbaz published in Milliyet newspaper.

UNESCO declared the year 1996, “Year of Nasreddin Hodja”. Turkey minted silver commemoratives bearing motifs in his cartoon style.

During this collaboration between the Turkish State Mint and Turhan Selcuk, another coin serie was contemplated but not realized. One of these designs (Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi) was used on the occasion of 1st World Air Games of 1997(*).

 

The designs of these coins were created by Turhan Selcuk, their models sculpted by Hakkı Baha Çavuşgil.

Stuart Devlin (1931~ 2018)

Stuart Devlin designed the FAO Commemoratives of 1983-84 World Fisheries Conference.

Said coşns were made in three types – all denominated at 500 Lira – in gold, silver and cupro-nickel.

Royal Mint lead a commemorative coin programme for the Conference being held in Rome, where twelve countries participated with coins.

The initial pieces were struck without any mint mark, however the pieces struck at the Royal Mint for sales outside Türkiye bear the logo with the Tower of London.  Later, the Turkish State Mint also introduced their own mint-mark designed by Suat Özyönüm(*28, p. 73~75).

Stuart Leslie Devlin, an Australian by birth (1931 Geelong – Victoria), attended the Gordon Institute of Technology, specialising in gold and silversmithing. Later studies gold and silversmithing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London and also a Harkness Fellowship at Columbia University in New York.

In 1982 he was awarded the royal warrant as goldsmith and jeweller to the Queen. He designed the commemorative coins for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also designed coins for around 30 different countries.

Stuart Devlin won the competition of 1964 for the design of the Australian coinage. The coins bear motifs of Australian native animals; such as a feather tail glider (1 c), a frilled lizard (2 c), an echidna (5c), a lyrebird (10 c), a platypus (20 c), Commonwealth Coat of Arms (50 c) and a mob of five kangaroos (1 $)

Abdullah Taşçı

Abdullah Tasci and his professor Namik Bayik created the patterns for the majority of the coins of the 1982 Spain FIFA World Cup Commemorative Coins series. (One coin of the set of four pieces was designed mint sculptor Suat Ozyonum.)

He enrolled the Academy of Fine Arts in 1967, and graduated the Graphical Arts Faculty in 1972.

He became assistant professor in 1982 with his thesis titled “Graphic Layout and Contemporary Book Graphics in Turkish Manuscripts” under Prof. Emin Barın. He tought at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts until his reitrement in 1999. Afterwards he tought at Maltepe University between 2000 and 2007, and at Dogus University between 2007 and 2020.

He created the logo still used by the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, designed 8 font families, and translated around 1.000 fonts into Turkish.

Namık Bayık (1926 ~ 1992)

Zekiye İffet Koç

She designed the 3.000 Lira silver commemorative for the 1981 IYDP International Year of the Disabled People and the gold coin commemorating 75th anniversary of the World Scouts of 1982.

She worked for the State Mint and Security Printhouse and during her 30 years of service, she designed numerous stamps, bonds and similar security paperwork compositions.

Zekiye Koc works on miniature painting and her works are being exhibited in Bazaar of Istanbul Arts since 1987 where she still continues her workshop.

Etem Çalışkan

Etem Caliskan is the artist who created the designs of the silver and gold coins commemorating the Centenary of Ataturk’s birth. (relief and models were made by the State Mint sculptor Hakkı Baha Cavusgil).

The artist studied at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts, as a sudent of Prof. Emin Barın (who designed the circulation coins of 1947) and also  Prof. Namık Bayık who designed some of the 1982 commemoratives for World Football Cup.

Born in 1928 in Tarsus – Göçük. Studied in Mersin during his elementary and middle school. Enrolled Academy of Fine Arts, Poster Department for higher education.

Studied pattern under Prof. Sabri Berkel, typography under Prof. Emin Barın, poster design and graphics under Prof. Namık Bayık.

Assisted Prof Emin Barin during construction of Anitkabir (Ataturk’s Mosoleum) as they were tasked with inscribing significant panels and walls.

Worked for various newspapers such as Zafer, Öncü, Dünya, Aksam, Milliyet, Hürriyet,  starting at Sabah in 1954 as an illustrator and calligrapher. Designed numerous book covers, posters; most notably the ones for the centenary of Atatürk’s birth.”

Hakkı Baha Çavuşgil (1924 ~ 2006)

Hakkı Baha Çavuşgil, started working for the Turkish State Mint in 1979 and created dozens of circulation and commemorative coins until his death.

He graduated from Fine Arts Academy and created many sculptures, focusing on abstract figures.

He was born on 15th of May, 1924 in Harput, Elazig. completed his primary and middle education in Canakkale, his high school in the capital; Financial Trade School of Ankara.

Enrolled to Academy of Fine Arts (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University today). Received lessons from Rudolf Belling and Zuhtu Muritoglu workshops, graduated sculpture programme in 1955. Also graduated Decoration and Ornamentation Arts Ceramics programme in 1957.

Studied in Italy under Italian Gov’t scholarship at Rome Istituto Centrale Del Restauro for five years.

Graduated Rome Medallion Arts School with honours (1962)

Staged dozens of exhibitions domestically and abroad, received several awards.

COSKUN

Turgut Salih Coşkun
COSKUN

Born in 1950, the artist studied thatre in the Conservatory of Istanbul. Performed within Chamber Theater of Bursa, Community Centre Stage, Communal Education Theatre and Net Theater. COSKUN also opened art exhibitions in 1967 and 1970. He started working for the Turkish State Mint in 1979.

 

 

 

 

He designed the FAO commemorative coins of 1980 which bear fishermen pulling their net, superimposed over a Turbot fish. The motto on the 5 Kurus, two and a half liras and 5 Lira coins of this series reads “Kalkınma için Balıkçılık” Fishing for development. The signature of the artist can be seen in the tail of the turbot as “T. S. Coşkun”.

 

In 1980 when the artist moved to France, Paris Mint comissioned a medal with theme of Istanbul. His handiwork was awarded with a 4.000 Francs reward.

He then studied direct metal forming techniques and  created solid bronze sculptures. He also applied his technique for producing medal moulds.

The artist creates sculptures and drawings in Paris since 1980. During winter, he works on his drawings and patterns and in the summer period he makes sculptures outside Paris.

He gained fame as COSKUN and his sculptures carved out of wood brighten various pars around Paris.

Engin Akarslan

Born in 1956, the artist worked at the State Mint between 1969 and 1997. Engin Akarslan is also the creator of the obverse design with the inscription “TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ” (Turkish Republic, Republic of Türkiye) and the wreath comprised of an ear of wheat and olive branch. This obverse pattern was used on many commemorative coins struck after 1979 (*1).

He also designed following commemoratives

    • 1992 30th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Türkiye
